We are so proud to see the way Nigerians are standing up to #endsars but we want to remind you to be vigilant against the ways in which the very systems of oppression you are fighting against will work to DIVIDE & DISTRACT you.

White supremacy & heteropatriarchy are deeply tied to each other. POWER STRUCTURES that become even more violent when questioned or challenged in any real sense. It can be difficult to identify all the ways in which whiteness and colonialism have stained the African continent but it is clear, even in revolutionary movements, how much work there is to do in DECOLONISING our value system and seeing ALL people as fully human.

There are some strong similarities between the #BlackLivesMatter movement & #ENDSARS - Both are uprisings against police brutality and the unchecked power of militarized police forces. In both movements, LGBTQ+ individuals are too often forgotten. As we’ve seen in Nigeria, they are being targeted by some individuals who claim to be in the same fight against state-sanctioned violence. We are asking our Nigerian family today to STAND AGAINST all forms of oppression and to fight for the protection & full human rights of ALL NIGERIANS.

Here is an excerpt from @matthew.blaise : “Queer Nigerians are one of the primary targets of SARS. It is selfish to say, we shouldn’t talk about it as it relates to us. It is selfish to say this is not our time. When then is our time? When we are totally erased by the system? Tell me if you even care for the right time? You don’t! And there’s no right time to fight for our lives. We are not just anything that should be discarded until we’re in need of usage again.”
